On-going:  "The Dargen Album - The War Begins" Exhibit at Rensselaer County Historical Society, 57 Second Street, Troy.

Did you know that Lansingburgh has a direct connection to the beginning of the Civil War? Col. Ellsworth, NY Fire Zouaves, became the first casualty of the Civil War when he was shot by the Marshall House hotel proprietor in Alexandria, VA while removing a secessionist flag flying in sight of the White House.  A split second later, the proprietor, Mr. Jackson, was shot by Lansingburgh native Frank E. Brownell.  A photo album with images of many area soldiers, including Brownell, is part of the collection of the Lansingburgh Historical Society, whose library collection is on deposit at RCHS.  The album was put together just days after the war started.  The exhibit uses the album as a lens for examining the early days of the conflict and its local impact.  This is the 2nd in a series of exhibits commemorating the 150th Anniversary of the Civil War highlighting Rensselaer County's involvement in battle and on the home front.
